The longest uninterrupted stretch of sandy beach in Europe? Yep, a solid 230km with world-class beach breaks surf when conditions are right. When a high-pressure system sits over the land, you will enjoy light offshore winds in the morning. The Pyrenees mountains greatly influence the weather. It can be raining in Biarritz and only overcast or even sunny in Hossegor. The endless beaches are skirted by sand dunes and thick forests, so it’s easy to find relative wilderness as an antidote to the busy towns. For a detailed overview, get the STORMRIDER book.
Consider this post as a rough draft, with our selection of places to live the life in the SW of France. They are easily are two favorite cities in the world.
Situated between Bordeaux and Biarritz, this charming hotel offers ocean views and is just 100 meters from the sea. It’s our all-time favorite, and we have many reasons to recommend it to friends and family. (featured video, côté Sud)
Set in Hossegor, Villa Seren is a new boutique hotel with Spa. Love the interior design & prime location overlooking the stunning lake. It’s pretty pricey in high season. Hotel 202, is another boutique hotel with sauna & swimming pool and a very cool owner. Walking distance from the Golf of Hossegor and within close proximity of Hossegor Beach. If you want to watch the surf from your bedroom, we highly recommend Baya Hotel & Spa in Capbreton. It’s also the most budget-friendly (Around 1400€ for 7 nights in high season). By far, my number one favorite in Hossegor is Lake Loft. (expect to pay around 2500€ per week in high season). Traveling with kids and need a trendy, budget-friendly solution? JO&JOE HOSSEGOR is your spot! This surf villa might also be something for you! Ideal for surfers who like to enjoy the unique Board ‘n Breakfast atmosphere but still want their private space.
As always, we also share some of our hand-picked Airbnb listings:
Recently renovated house with great outdoor living spaces & heated pool. (95€/night). Even better, this house is hard to beat in terms of price, reviews, style and prime location. Located in the heart of downtown Hossegor, the apartment “Maree Basse” has everything to seduce you. If you’re thinking outside the box, this sailboat could be yours for only 650€/week!
Part of the reason why we visit Hossegor so often is to go eat in some of our favorite restaurants: CJ Sushi, L’&tiquette, Le Mango Tree, Tante Jeanne, Le Café Sud, Waxed, Lou Cabana, Mambo, L’Açai, Le Surfing, Heads Brewery, and for fine dining Jean des Sables and Villa de l’Etang Blanc
